BioLumix has developed proprietary new technology that provides accurate and rapid microbiological answers in a complete system approach in an inexpensive and simple format. The system is based on detection of the metabolic processes of organisms using newly developed dye technologies. These allow simultaneous detection of color and fluorescence with a single detector by combining the dye, a new light source and an optical sensor.

The new patented technology is based on monitoring changes in the chemical characteristics of a microbial liquid growth medium in which target microorganisms grow and detect by optically sensitive reagents (color and fluorescence dyes). The reagents change their spectral patterns as metabolic processes take place. These changes are detected by an optical sensor and are monitored at predetermined time intervals.

The key to the technology is the monitoring of these changes in a detection zone (the bottom of the vial) separated from an incubation zone by a membrane or porous material, thereby eliminating the masking of the optical pathway by the product and microbial turbidity. Changes in color or fluorescence, expressed as optical units, are detected by the optical sensor and recorded in the computer. Sample volume of up to 10 ml can be used in the disposable vial. Each vial location incorporates a dual-color Light Emitting Diode (LED) to cover the full spectrum of colors and an ultraviolet fluorescent tube.

Simplifies: The BioLumix system represents the ultimate in convenience. Prepared vials with growth media have been developed to meet the needs of each customer. To complete an assay, the user simply places the test sample in a test vial and positions it in the BioLumix instrument. Over a period of hours (rather than days), using the new optical technology, the system measures color and fluorescence readings from the vial and analyzes the results to determine the level of contaminants. Results are easy to interpret and are automatically transmitted via various communication channels to where they are needed, such as the warehouse, to expedite shipping of safe product.

Expedites and Reduces Cost: The BioLumix system is faster than most technologies on the market. Individually prepared vials enable testing to be completed more quickly. The newly developed optical technology provides results more rapidly. Since the system can be operated by non-microbiologists, there are tremendous labor cost savings. Whenever companies relocate their production to lower-cost geographies, testing can be performed by locally available technicians with minimal training.
